Brad Paisly Concert

Last night we got to go to the Energy Solutions arena and see the Chuck Wicks (Stealin' Cinderella), Rodney Atkins (Watchin' You, If You're Goin' Through Hell), & Brad Paisly concert. We had a ton of fun. We didn't even get home until 1:00 this morning. We went with some of our friends which made it a nice night out for us. The kids stayed with Trav's mom and dad and I picked them up this morning so it was a bit quieter at home this morning for a change!

Nash is doing SO much better. He was improving within 24 hours after getting his first dose of Zythromax. Now you'd never know how sick he was! We are just glad to have our happy little boy back. Thanks for all your help & prayers for him, we really appreciate it.

Nash's Adventure

Good News!!

2:30 pm - Well, we went to the pediatrician's office this morning. The dr. was able to get the blood he needed out of the IV they put in last night. He was going to give him a bag of fluid while we waited for the test results but after drawing the blood was unable to save the IV. So, he sent us home to wait. Nash had thrown up while we were waiting to see the dr. so when we got him home we gave him more nausea medicine. The dr. finally called back and said that his bacteria count is down to 1.2 (which is MUCH better than the 9.3 when he was first admitted and even better than the 3.9 when he was released). The dr. said that all the things that were elevated and shouldn't have been are still going down and getting closer to normal. So, what do we do now? Stay at home and wait for him to get better! The dr. said to call if he doesn't start getting better, otherwise all we can do now is wait. Fun! At least it's finally good news!

5:30 pm - The doctor's office just called me back. This morning when they took blood to do Nash's lab work, I had asked about the possibility of Rhumatic fever. The pediatrician said he'd run a test that would check to see if Nash had had any recent strep infections (you have to have strep before you can have Rhumatic fever). We were told it would take 2-3 days to get those test results back. Well, apparently the results are back already. It appears that Nash has been exposed to strep. Which means that he may have possibly had Rhumatic fever. There are several symptoms that go with Rhumatic fever that Nash hasn't had and there isn't an exact test for Rhumatic fever, so it's hard to say that's what it was for sure. The nurse said they'd call in antibiotics for him, so we'll go from there!

Sunday drive to the ER

Well, I was hoping we were doing better...Nash only threw up once yesterday. Unfortunately, he threw up nearly a dozen times today. He couldn't keep down water, Motrin, Tylenol, 7-up...
At 6:30 we went to the emergency room. They gave him some nausea medicine they give cancer patients. It's called Zofron. Not too much later, he was still throwing up. So, we had to redo his IV. The poor nurse tried to put it in his foot with no success (she even used lidocaine to numb it so he wasn't wiggling so much). She said he was just so dehyrdated that his veins were pretty flat and so they were hard to get to. So, we had to put his IV back into his left hand where he had it all week last week. Luckily she got it on the first try (probably helped that she used a smaller needle). At this point he was telling the nurse that he hated her. Poor guy!
After getting his IV in, they put more Zofron into his IV. They let him watch a SpongeBob movie while his IV was going. Thank heavens for SpongeBob! After nearly all of his IV had gone in, he was a bit perkier and sucking on a popcicle.
They sent us home with a couple extra Zofron (just in case) and left his IV in. Hopefully this will save us a sticking tomorrow when we go to see the pediatrician - and heaven forbid, if we need to hydrate him again we won't have to start yet another IV. The nurse tonight did say that they should be able to draw blood from his IV tomorrow so we'll cross our fingers and hope it's an uneventful night!

More on Nash

Saturday Jan. 19th: Well, he slept through the night so that was nice. I think he was thrilled not to get woke up at 5 am in order to be poked four or five times. He was acting like he still wasn't feeling too great this morning though. He was thrilled to see his sister. I decided I'd take Samantha to town and we'd have a girl day. Just as I was ready to walk out the door (about noon), Nash threw up all over everywhere. He hasn't thrown up all week! I HATE new symptoms!! I immediately called the Budge Clinic and asked to speak to the dr. on call. They told me he was booked with patients until 2 pm and that he'd return messages then. So, I left a VERY detailed message and waited for him to call me back. Well, about 2:30 I got a call back from the dr. on call. He basically told me that if Nash seemed to be the same then to keep doing what I'm doing and keep his appointment on Monday (Duh, like I'd cancel at this point!). Then he said that if his temperature goes back up or if he starts getting dehydrated again because he can't keep anything down or if I just think he's getting worse, to take him to the InstaCare or the Emergency room. I told him I knew that InstaCare wouldn't do anything for him so I was not going to take him there for sure (he pretty much agreed with that one).
So, here we are at 9 at night and he's still fairly miserable but hasn't thrown up again and he has eaten some since noon. Unfortunately, he's still complaining about his back and leg pain and having difficulty walking. My grandpa asked if we had had him checked for Rhumatic Fever. I asked the dr. that and he said that technically, you have to have strep first and that no strep test had been run. I'll be asking his pediatrician about that one on Monday! I took him down to see my grandpa Maughan tonight though and asked him to give him another blessing (he and my cousin's husband did that for me once on Wednesday morning already). I'm hoping we'll see a turn around by tomorrow!
Thanks for your prayers!

Nash

What an adventure we have had this week! Nash and Travis were sick on Sat. but Nash seemed to be doing better Sunday and Travis was better by Sunday.

Tuesday, Jan. 15th: He still wasn't himself on Monday and he woke up at 2 am on Tuesday with a fever. He wouldn't sleep for more than 30 min. at a time and he just kept saying, "Mommy, I need you." I took him to Wellsville with me that morning to get some work done and my mom picked Sam up from preschool. After I was done in Wellsville, I went home and he was still just burning up. He had fleece pjs on and wanted his fleece blanket on and had socks on and was just shaking like he was freezing. I finally called the doctor's office around 2 and made an appointment with a dr. that I hadn't seen before so I was kinda nervous about that. We got to the dr. and his temperature was 104. He was showing serious signs of dehydration and wouldn't sit up and take motrin or drink any water for me. So, the dr. admitted him to the hospital. Everyone pretty much thought that they'd admit him for the night, hydrate him and send him home in the morning. Well, they got him admitted and started and IV and drew blood to do some lab work. About an hour after they got blood, the nurse came in and said, his bacteria count is 9.3 (it's supposed to be less than 0.8) and his white blood cell count was through the roof. So, they started him on some antibiotics (Rocefin) and drew more blood to do a blood culture so that they could tell exactly what bacteria they were dealing with.

Wednesday Jan. 16th: They come in to do lab work at like 5 am. Well, Nash has really small veins because he's a little kid. They also roll a lot because he moves a lot because he DOES NOT like to be poked with a needle. And, when you get dehydrated, your bloodthickens and so it's harder to draw. Well, each time they tried to draw blood this week they had to poke him AT LEAST 3 times. By Wednesday night when the people from the lab would come in to draw blood, he told me, "I hate those people mommy! I'm mad!" I just told him that it was ok to hate them and to be mad. Well, Wednesday he still had a temperature of 102 and still wasn't eating or drinking like he should. When his labs came back his bacteria count and white blood cell count were still both really high. They started to run different tests to see if they could find anything because it takes at least 24 hrs to grow anything. He was still getting the antibiotics every 12 hours though. We got the stool and urine samples back from Tuesday night and they were both normal too. I think it was this day that they tried to start a new iv line just to draw blood out of and ended up bruising both spots really bad. We did do a chest x-ray this day to find out if it was pneumonia. I had to leave him with Travis for several hours while I went and did a jewelry party. Travis said he was up and playing and happy for several hours. He did have Motrin in him and it was working at this point so that was good. Pancreatitus blood work came back negative - good news.

Thursday Jan. 17th: Labs at about 5 am again and at least 3 pokes to get anything. I think it was today that they took an hour and a half to get 2 tiny viles of blood. He had been complaining of the top of his head hurting Wednesday night so, we did cat scans today. He wouldn't drink the stuff they gave him to make his insides show up so, we had to put a tube up his nose and put it into him with a syringe. He didn't get to eat breakfast before he had to have this stuff so he didn't get to eat until 2:30 in the afternoon. He still isn't eating or drinking like he needs to be. He slept for all but 45 min. until 5 pm on this day except for when they were poking him. He woke up at 5 because the pediatrician came in and we did a spinal tap to check for Meningitis. Another urine and stool sample. The nurse said she hadn't even heard of some of the tests they were running on the stool sample (that's how many things he was being tested for). Still getting antibiotics 2 times a day even though we don't know what we're treating.

Friday Jan. 18th: 4 pokes to get 3 tiny viles of blood!! My son is officially a pin cushion for the lab people! Good news today: White blood cell count down from 27,000 to 15,000 and Bacteria count down from 9.3 to 3 (remember it's supposed to be less than .8). We get to go home today! He got 2 more doses of antibiotics in him before we left to go home. He still isn't eating or drinking like he needs to be. His temperature is still at least 100 if he doesn't stay on Tylenol and Motrin. Complaining of leg pain, limping and back is killing him where they did the spinal tap. Poor boy. We go back to the pediatrician on Monday at 10 am and get to have more blood work drawn to make sure the numbers are still going down. Still absolutely NO idea what is wrong with him!!!!

Hope your week has been less eventful and filled with activities more fun than this!

Snow, Snow, Snow!

When the weatherman told us we were going to get a 1-2 punch with the latest storm, we were a little skeptical. We got snowed on Friday night a little bit and then a little more on Saturday night. We really didn't think we were going to see that much this morning. By 5:00 we decided we needed to go pick up the kids (despite the fact that it was still snowing and the snowplow hadn't been by all day). They had spent the night with Travis' parents. It took Travis an hour to dig out the driveway! Much to our surprise, Trav's parents didn't get as much snow as we did (and they only live about 20 min. away!) The kids had fun playing all day with their visiting cousins. They even went outside and built a snowman.

I have decided that it was time to start taking my profile pictures. I've done this with both of the other kids and it's pretty fun to go back and look at how quickly my belly grows. The kids really get a kick out of it. So, we've got our first profile picture and I'm 100% sure that I'm bigger at 12 weeks this time than I was either of the last two times!

2007 in Review

In February Samantha turned 4 years old. She finished pre-school at Riverside in Logan in May and had her year end dance review in May as well.

In April we moved to our new home in Hyrum. Our new mailing address is: 182 East 100 South Hyrum, UT 84319. We have absolutely LOVED having all the space. I never imagined we'd be able to fill the entire place - boy was I wrong!

In May Nash turned 2 years old. He has been so much fun to watch. He has SO much energy that I wake up in the morning knowing that I'll be tired again in about 2 hours simply from trying to keep up with him! He adores his big sister and follows her around like a puppy all day long. He even wants to go to preschool with her rather than leave her there for a few hours twice a week.

Also in May, Travis had a work related accident. Originally I thought it was going to cost him 3 fingers on his left hand. Fortunately it only cost him the tip of one finger. Unfortunately, it's his chord hand for playing; his guitar. We managed to get his guitar adapted but he's still working on learning to play again.

In July I began selling Lia Sophia jewelry. I have really enjoyed doing this - partly because I can finally wear jewelry that won't make me break out in my eczema & partly because it gives me a chance to work on my public speaking skills. I have met a lot of really nice people and have had a lot of fun doing it too. My website link is at the bottom of the page if you want to check out our jewelry.

In September Samantha started preschool again. This year she is going to preschool just 3 doors down from our house. She really enjoys going to Miss Kathryn's preschool & has made lots of new friends. She went through a phase where it was a battle to get her to school in the morning because she was certain that she did not want to turn 5 and that she did not want to go to Kindergarten. Hopefully we've gotton through the worst of that phase and have got her convinced that Kindergarten is still a little ways away and that she'll be fine when she does go to Kindergarten.

In Septemember we also made our annual trip to Lake Powell. We had tons of fun. Nash got over his fear of water (mostly) after a near drowning incident at my parent's house in June. We were on a "new" houseboat this year since Travis' parents invested in a new time share with his Aunt Lori and Uncle Brad. Even after a week on the water, the kids were still not ready to come home!

In October Travis went Elk hunting with his dad and uncles and he actually killed something! He brought home an Elk and we've been testing out Elk meet in various recipes since then.

In November we learned that we are expecting baby number 3! The kids are very excited about this and both have said they'd like a sister. Samantha is convinced however that she's going to be getting another brother whether she likes it or not. Since we won't know whether it's a boy or a girl until about Easter, she's still got some time to adjust to the idea of another brother.

In December, my little brother graduated from rehab & moved back home. He lasted at home for about a week before he started to struggle again. He has since moved in with us and has been here for about 2 or so weeks. He has been doing much better than many thought he would and we have really enjoyed having him with us. The kids have especially enjoyed having Uncle Zack live with them because they love him SO much and the idea of having him around 24 hours a day is the best idea they've ever heard of! While he was in rehab, he managed to graduate from High School which means he's got his diploma and doesn't have to return to school where many of his problems were. We've got our fingers crossed that he'll be able to turn his life around now that he's been given a second chance.

The kids were SO much fun at Christmas this year. Samantha got lots of Polly Pockets (It's all she's been talking about for the last 4 months!). Nash got lots of "Mater" (the tow truck from the Cars movie) toys. His 2 favorite presents came from my mom - his new work bench with lots of tools and an excavator that has controls he can use to dig with the bucket in the dirt. Can't wait to take it outside and watch him go nuts in the piles of dirt!

We are looking forward to a great 2008 and hope that by having a blog we'll be able to keep those of you that don't have a myspace page up to date on all our adventures!
